The first time I experienced sound healing was on a meditation retreat and I was fascinated by the potency and power of the voice to open vortexes to heal. As I listened there was something primordial about the sounding and it took me deeper and deeper. That’s when my curiosity about sounding started to take root, and I started to explore using sound to heal and delve into levels of consciousness.
Everything is vibration and vibrates at its own level or frequency. All sounds are vibrations that travel through the air as sound waves. Frequency is one form of measurement for sound. All thoughts and emotions start out as energy in motion… vibration. Using sound frequency for healing consists of either disrupting unwanted frequencies or amplifying healthy frequencies.
Everything resonates at a specific frequency: crystal glass has a natural resonance, a frequency at which it will vibrate easily. To shatter glass the sound has to be at that same resonance with a vibration that has large enough force to break the glass. When we apply this principle in healing to disrupt an unwanted frequency, such as a physical or emotional illness, you direct the sound frequency to the area you want to bring back into balance or health.
Intention is everything. It is an invisible force that directs the universe. When we are in harmony with that source from which we all came, then we are in the flow and have the power of the source. When we let go of our connection and doubt ourselves and our connection, our level of consciousness or vibration plummets. When using sounding to heal ourselves or others we must hold a clear intention so that the energy sounding is directed and does not dissipate and disintegrate.
Sacred sounds and words, used with the right kind of awareness and respect, are a practice that has the power to uplift, heal and enlighten.
Believed to be the basic sound of the world and contain all other sounds. It is a creation sound. It is a mantra or prayer in itself. Make the sound Aum or Om. If repeated it can resonate throughout the body and the sound can penetrate to the centre of one’s being. As you sound, allow it to come from deep within you. Allow emphasis on the beginning and the end. Let it last as long as it wants to.
OM Namah Shivaya
The repetition of it is said to purify and awaken you to your higher consciousness. The energy of the sounds is designed to create a transformation in your consciousness and enable you to attain a higher state of awareness. It is translated as Honouring the Divine Within.
Translated as Truth is My Name. Acknowledging our Essence and calling upon the Eternal Truth that resides in all of us. The vibration of this pulls us up through our crown chakra.
The Sufis believe Hu as the sound of God, the sound of divinity and by many traditions to be the universal name of God. Hu is considered to be the highest vibratory mantra that can be sounded and it’s believed by chanting it leads one to transcendence and enlightenment.
Hu is chanted similarly to Om or Aum but with a Huuuuuuuuu. Allow it to come from deep within and let it last as long as . Like the Om, it will immediately raise your vibration and the vibration of the space you’re in.
